Finishes

At Shattered Edge Studios, we believe a product is not finished unless it is hand finished. We use alcohol ink, acrylic paint, and artistry-grade markers to bring the highly detailed engravings to life. For wood products, we can apply a polyurethane coating that is food safe, or hand-rub a butcher block oil into the wood to preserve the engraving and wood. The oil we use is commonly available at home improvement and retail stores such as Target, Walmart, The Home Depot, and Lowe's. All other products are polyurethane coated unless you choose otherwise.

Our food safe butcher block conditioning oil contains beeswax, carnauba wax, and high-grade mineral oil. The mineral oil penetrates the wood for lasting benefit, while the waxes provide a durable coating that lasts. This ensures that your treated kitchenware is safe for use - not just decorative. If you choose to use your wood kitchenware as functional tools, please apply the protectant of your choice periodically to keep your products in their best condition.

Polyurethane is a tough plasticized coating. Polyurethane is generally considered food safe, but is not suitable for cutting surfaces as the coating may be dislodged from the product and contaminate your food. The durable coating is excellent for preventing fingerprints, sealing surfaces, waterproofing, and giving a medium sheen to the products. Our serving trays, coasters, and similar products benefit from a functional, waterproof surface, and our decorative products gain an easy-to-clean coating that lasts.

Our mirrors are a special exception. Mirrors are typically reverse engraved - we remove the reflective coating from the back to let the paint shine through the front. Once painted, we apply the polyurethane coating to seal the artwork. This leaves the mirrors as functional as they are beautiful. You can clean the mirrors daily with your favorite glass cleaner with no worry of disturbing the artwork. Mirrors are then framed in a basic frame, or for our most exceptional works of art, a custom frame that is appropriate for the art style.

Our hand finishing process adds work, sometimes a significant amount of labor and time, to create one-of-a-kind finished pieces. In some cases, the painting alone consumes more than a day to complete. We believe the additional investment in our products are worth the cost and will warm your home as much as they do ours.
